Goal line cameras prove their worth in the Eredivisie

After a well-deserved winter break, in which the fields remained empty and the goal nets untouched, national football is back in full swing. With the resumption of the Eredivisie, we want to reflect on a technological advancement that transformed the first half of the season: goal-line cameras.

These cameras, now installed in all Eredivisie stadiums, have proven their worth in accurately determining the most debated question in football: was it a goal? In the first half of the competition, VAR used the Goal Line Replay in six cases to assess whether the ball had completely crossed the goal line. This led to one significant turnaround, where a goal was awarded after consulting the images.

The new technology, consisting of four high frame rate cameras in each stadium, strengthens the VAR's toolbox with precision images that are essential when assessing crucial moments of play. Whether it's a goal, penalty, red card, or identifying the right player in the heat of battle; the cameras provide a clearer view of the action.

In total, the cameras have been consulted 169 times by the VAR to verify the referee's decisions. Of these checks, 17 led to a revision of the original decision. Across 144 matches, VAR reviewed the footage more than 800 times and recommended a review in 56 cases. The average VAR check took 99 seconds, showing that efficiency remains in play.

A notable moment in which the Goal Line Replay played a decisive role was during the FC Utrecht - Ajax match, where a goal by Mike van der Hoorn was awarded after careful assessment. This incident highlights the impact technology has on the fairness and ultimate outcomes of matches.

The introduction of goal-line cameras marks a new phase in Dutch football, where technology and sport come together to ensure the integrity of the game. As we look forward to the rest of the matches, we can say with confidence that the truth on the pitch is now clearer than ever before.
